Sussex Ladies Cup – Quarter Final
Lewes 2 4 (Gibson, Godfrey, Graves, Smith)
Horsham 3 3

Just before Christmas, Lewes had lost disappointingly to Horsham in a tight, fiercely contested game, which added a competitive edge to the return leg. Although Horsham initially took the lead, it was short-lived when a Horsham player inadvertently kicked a Becky Godfrey cross over the line. Lewes went behind again before half time, but a stunning strike from the top of the circle from Shaney Smith saw Lewes level at the break.

Lewes managed to adapt better to the Horsham play in the second half and began to gain the ascendency in a very open game. Strong play from player of the match Michelle Wolfe and Caitlin Boyland presented more attacking options across the half line, whilst Sarah Hall and Carla Leach were strong in defence. A further Horsham goal received another reply from the consistent Amy Graves and, with ten minutes to go, both sides were pushing for victory. It was Lewes who prevailed, with Issy Gibson latching onto a Helen Fuller cross and forcing the ball into the back of the net for a hard won, and very sweet, three points.

Sussex Ladies League Division One
Lewes 3 5
Eastbourne 3 0

Sussex Ladies League Division Three
Lewes 4 2 (Fawssett, Wiggett)
East Grinstead 4 7

Considering this was a game Lewes expected to lose badly, the score reflects a dogged determination by the Lewes Ladies 4s to go for goal rather than give up from the first whistle.
During the first half Lewes had some good attacking opportunities and defended very well against the East Grinstead onslaught. Goalkeeper, Dionne ‘The Terminator’ Gooding ensured the scoreline was a respectable 0-1 by half time.

During the second half, Sarah Wiggett piled on the pressure with some dynamic runs up the right wing. Goals came from a beautiful penalty corner right post deflection from Wiggett and a confident strike at close range from Milli Fawssett. Lewes remain an inspirational fifth in League Division 3.

MEN

South Hockey League Kent/Sussex Regional Division 1
Lewes 1 3 (Charles (3))
Crawley 1 0

Lewes returned to home turf on Saturday against a Crawley side lacking confidence after a troublesome season to date. Lewes started brightly and converted their first penalty corner to take a lead that from then on would never look threatened. Lewes forward Dafydd Charles added his and the team’s second goal shortly after and from then on Lewes were cruising.

Charles picked up his third of the afternoon, a tomahawk from the edge of the area midway through the second half. Lewes piled on the pressure but were unable to take their chances in a seemingly very one sided game. Lewes dominated possession throughout the second half, which will give them confidence heading into the top of the table clash that awaits on Saturday away against Holcombe. A win would firmly put a foot in the door as Lewes seek the league title. The men in green remain top for another week.

South Hockey League Sussex Area Division 1
Southwick 1 3
Lewes 3 2 (Donaldson, Johnson)

A depleted Lewes 3s side faced Southwick – a match they ought to have done better in earlier in the season. Lewes really were struggling to make up numbers for the start of the match, so thanks to Will Brickell who played extremely well up front for about twenty minutes before Lewes’ final player showed up. The match itself was fairly even – but Southwick looked fairly dangerous in attack, often finding themselves with men over. After some smart saves by Ben Graves, Southwick scored through a well-taken reverse stick shot.

Half time came and went, and Lewes managed to organise the midfield a little better to cope with Southwick’s attacking prowess. Lewes then drew level; Ben Johnson took and ran with a free hit, finding Sam Rea in enough space to set up Sam Johnson, who calmly slotted the ball under the onrushing ‘keeper. This rattled Southwick, who brought on their coach in an attempt to steady the ship. Fortunately for them, this worked, as he put in a well placed through-ball to the post, resulting in a tap-in for a Southwick forward.

No sooner had this happened, when Lewes drew level again; Angus Donaldson dribbled a good forty yards to goal to score an excellent goal. Lewes looked to have played out the game (with only twenty seconds left) – but lost the ball at their own penalty corner, allowing Southwick to break – and score, via a touch at the left post that was either deft or extremely fortunate. Lewes were bitterly disappointed – but the performance was an improvement, and they will look to take points off of Penguin instead next week in their scrap to maintain fifth place.

Sussex Development League
Lewes Lions 2 (Steadman, Waller)
Brighton & Hove Flippers 1

Lewes Lions showed a good measure of their improvement through the season, avenging an earlier 5-1 loss with a glorious 2-1 victory. The quality of play was breathtaking, with noticeably fast ball speed and exceptional team shape and positioning. Harvey Waller has to be a 1st Xl player of the near future, but others having found their correct positions raised their game against high standard from the opposition. Michael Wood, Tim Bage and Martin Greenham have advanced enormously and Elliot Mcgahan had a particularly good second half. Ed Rae and George Collison in goal made important goal saving challenges. Morgan Steadman equalized an early Brighton goal and Harvey Waller capped his skilled and athletic performance.
