MEN

South Hockey League Kent/Sussex Regional Division 1
Crawley 1 3
Lewes 1 7 (Champness, Charles (2), Jervis (3), Newton)

Lewes overwhelmed Crawley in their final league match. They won the league scoring over one hundred goals in the season.

The early exchanges looked as though both sides had enjoyed their Easter breaks and with the warm weather there was plenty of misplaced passes. Lewes had the majority of possession but failed to capitalise on early opportunities. With twenty minutes gone and the match goalless Lewes finally broke the deadlock from close range from skipper Rory Jervis. Within five minutes their hundredth league goal arrived and it was apt that Jervis should score it. Just on half time Jervis scored his hat-trick and Lewes were coasting.

Early in the second half Lewes were down to ten men and Crawley took advantage to get a goal back and then, despite Lewes being back up to eleven players, Crawley grabbed a second. This stung Lewes into action and Daffyd Charles scored from a penalty corner and then from open play, with Will Champness also scoring after his shot was deflected in also from a penalty corner. With ten minutes left Lewes scored their final goal after good approach play left Steve Newton with a simple tap in. Crawley scored the final goal from a penalty stroke in the closing stages.

Lewes will enjoy the summer break before preparing for life in South Premier Division Two.

LADIES

Sussex Ladies Cup – Semi Final
Lewes 1 4 (Maxwell, Oliver, Spence, Worth)
Lewes 2 2 (Delaney, Gibson)

With the Sussex Cup final and the National 2nd XI Trophy final both falling on 25 April, this semi-final would see Lewes 1s progress whatever the outcome. The game nevertheless provided a welcome opportunity for both sides to refocus after the Easter break and prepare for their respective finals at the end of the month.

The 2s did well to contain the 1s for the first quarter of the match, but eventually fell four behind following goals from Fiona Maxwell, Laura Oliver, Emily Spence and Anna Worth. The 2s however responded strongly with two well-taken goals from Issy Gibson and Becca Delaney and will feel positive about a robust team performance. The 2s player of the match was centre-back Anna George.

The 2s face South league opponents again this Saturday as they host Eastbourne 1s at 3.00 p.m. at the Southdown.

Mercian Home Counties Colts Hockey – Quarter Final

Lewes Under 18s face Surbiton this Sunday at the Southdown Club at 1.30pm in the quarter finals of the Home Counties Colts competition.

Lewes entered for only the first time this year and enjoyed an unbeaten run in the South East league to set up this quarter final clash. They defeated Canterbury, Woking, Haslemere, Bromley and Beckenham, Guildford and East Grinstead.

They will be underdogs against Surbiton, one of the top club sides in the country who will have some players with National League experience. Coach Chris Marchant said 'the players have done really well this season and have nothing to lose against what will be a very strong Surbiton team. If we can perform like we have throughout the season, who knows, we may cause an upset, but whatever the result the players have benefited from this experience and deserve this opportunity.'

The semi-finals and final will be held on Monday, 3 May at Reading Hockey Club so there will be considerable incentive for both sides in what promises to be an exciting ma
