1 March 2008

Sussex Ladies League Division One
Lewes 2 8
Crowborough 1 0

The half term break took its toll on the home side in the first half of this fixture, which on paper should have been a formality for on form Lewes. A lacklustre performance left Lewes only 1-0 up at half time, much to the consternation of players and coach alike. However Lewes bounced back with three goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to put the match beyond the reach of the visitors. The final 8-0 scoreline, including a hat-trick from Laura Oliver, brings Lewes’ goal difference to within five of league leaders Eastbourne Cygnets and keeps them in the hunt for promotion to the Sussex Premier Division. Player of the match was Jan Goldsmith who displayed impressive work rate for the whole 70 minutes.

Sussex Ladies League Division One
Lewes 2 5 (Graves, Oliver (4))
South Saxons 1 1

Lewes 2s looked to seek revenge in this home game against a South Saxons side who managed to steal a lucky draw in the first half of the season at Hastings. This was a must win game for Lewes 2s who are still in the hunt for two league wins in succession. Improving with every game after last season’s promotion from Division 2, Lewes’ now play a confident, flowing style of hockey which Saxons just couldn’t cope with on the day.

Lewes were three goals up within 25 minutes and to their credit were not phased by a Saxons side more concerned with disrupting the game and breaking down play than attempting to win the fixture. Laura Oliver marked a four goal player of the match performance with a stunning lifted strike on the turn from the top of the D. Amy Graves also converted with aplomb from a slick penalty corner routine.

Division 1 can still realistically be won by any of the top four teams, but Lewes and Eastbourne are playing the more attractive hockey and now deservedly share top spot in the league on points, although the latter have a game in hand. Crawley and Saxons may be the more experienced teams, but it is encouraging to see the sides that are willing to play open and expansive hockey coming to the fore this side of Christmas.

26 January 2008

Sussex Ladies League Division One
Chichester Priory Park 2 1
Lewes 2 4 (Graves (2), Oliver, Spence)

Lewes travelled to Chichester this week to continue their promotion push. Three points was the aim and this was the result, although at times it did not look like being so. Both teams were evenly matched for the first half, with Lewes just on top in terms of shots on goal. Laura Oliver had a well taken goal disallowed, but scored another, so at half time it was 1-0; this was not a secure position.

The second half was exciting with fast breaks from both teams. The Lewes defence had a momentary lapse and Chichester took advantage, equalising after five minutes. The next 20 minutes saw both teams looking as though they could take the game. Then Lewes were awarded a succession of penalty corners. Amy Graves converted two of these corners and Emily Spence scored an excellent deflected goal from open play. Chichester tried to battle back but to no avail. This was a satisfying victory with good performances from all, especially player of the match Graves and Gwen in her first game for the club

This Saturday see the ladies 2s in a big game against South Saxons who are in also the promotion race, with the top four teams having two points between them.

19 January 2008

ussex Ladies League Division One
Lewes 2 3
Eastbourne Cygnets 0

This was going to be a big game for Lewes after an unfavourable result against Eastbourne in the last half of the season. The full strength Lewes were fired up and ready. Both teams came out at a high pace and both defences were working hard. Lewes looked to be just on top but were struggling to convert until five minutes before half time.

The second half got more exciting as Lewes continued to press up front and absorb more pressure at the back. Lewes converted a penalty corner but were still not safe. Then a penalty stroke was awarded and saved well by the Eastbourne ‘keeper. This made Lewes even more determined to put the result safe and did so with a goal with ten minutes of the second half remaining. Eastbourne did not give up though and had a couple of moments which the Lewes defence cleaned up. This keeps promotion hopes alive, with Lewes now equal points with third placed Eastbourne. There were outstanding performances by all of Lewes but Emily Spence was named player of the match.
