Lewes Men's 5th 11 vs Worthing Penguins 2nd 11
Lewes Men's 5th 11 were in dominant form against Worthing Penguins,
securing possession in the oppositions half for much of the game.
Patiently fought, a 1-0 lead was finally secured with an excellent
drag flick from a short corner at the end of the first half. Some
great goal keeping and a strong defence and midfield helped the
forwards extend the lead to 3-0 with a short corner shot, and a
tight angle attack by Simon Morford. This win helped Lewes maintain
their position at the top of the league and put a bit of clearance
between them and their closest rivals.

Sussex Open League Division 1
Southwick 2 0
Lewes 5 2 (Morford, Thomas)
Lewes maintained their top of the league position last week with
a win against Southwick who at the time were on equal points. A
close range shot from Ed Thomas on a well worked penalty corner
secured the first and Simon Morford got the second with a penalty
corner flick into the bottom corner.
The real heroes of the day were the Lewes defence Ed Cade, Mark
Tonkin, Max Bloomfield and Rob Nash who soaked up wave after wave
of attack from a determined Southwick forward line who never really
got a shot off due to the defenders’ grit and determination.
This Saturday sees Lewes host Penguins at home for what could prove
to be the league’s decisive game, with both teams on 41 points
at the top of the table.

Sussex Open League Division 1
Lewes 5 4 (Alwyn, Bloomfield, Marchant (2))
Mid Sussex 2 2
Lewes went top of Sussex Men’s Division One on Saturday with
a win over Mid Sussex at home. Max Bloomfield was instrumental in
the success with solid defending from left back as well as stepping
up to score a well placed penalty marking his first goal of the
season. Chris Marchant scored a cracker from the top of the area
which flew high into the back of the net. Richard Alwyn netted from
close in. In the second half Chris Marchant scored a second to make
the final score 4-2.
With three teams all on equal points at the top of the table, Lewes
face both of these rivals over the next fortnight with Southwick
(3rd place) this Saturday and Penguins (2nd place) the following
week. These games will most likely decide the outcome of Sussex
Division One.

Hailsham 2 2
Lewes 5 5 (Alwyn, Copplestone, Loader (2), Thomas)
When second in the league Lewes 5s met bottom placed Hailsham 2s
the result was no surprise, 5-2 to Lewes. Steve Loader scoring two,
the first from open play and the second from a penalty corner before
setting up Richard Alwyn with a neat slip to the centre spot for
the third. Ed Thomas made up for missing a penalty by scoring the
fourth and a second half goal from James Copplestone finished the
result which was never in doubt. The league positions remain unchanged.

Sussex Open League Division 1
Lewes 5 2 (Nash, Thomas)
Chichester Priory Park 5 3
There were no excuses for league leaders Lewes at they lost at
home to ninth placed Chichester. Lewes never looked up to their
usual form and when Chichester scored after a shot hit the post
and rebounded off the ‘keeper and back into the goal, the
stage was set for a game that was not to run in the home team’s
favour. Ed Thomas scored the first for Lewes, a neat slip from the
near post. Rob Nash got the second but with Lewes over-committed
on an attack, Chichester scored on the break and knocked Lewes off
the top spot.

Sussex Open League Division 1
Littlehampton 1 0
Lewes 5 5
Lewes managed to dig deep, with six of their regular team out of
action or unavailable, to hang on to their league winning form and
beat Littlehampton 5-0. A penalty stroke by Ed Thomas and an excellent
drag flick by Luke Reynolds saw Lewes up 2-0 at half time. An inspiring
run up the field and set up by Sam Matthews and a couple of great
saves by ‘keeper Declan Rowell (keeping two very fast drag
flicks out of our goal and maintaining another clean sheet) made
the long journey through West Sussex well worth the effort.

Sussex Open League Division 1
Lewes 5 4 (Callf, Green (2), Kempton)
South Saxons 3 0
Lewes took some time to come back to form after the long Christmas
break and it wasn’t until the second half that the attack
managed to find a hole in the Saxons defence. Some excellent goalkeeping
from the visitors kept them in the game before Ole Callf scored
his trademark acute angle shot. Justin Green, also relying on his
trademark reverse stick flick over the goalie on the ground scored
the first of two and Ashley Kempton neatly slotted home from midfield
to make it Lewes 4 Saxons 0. Lewes remain second in Sussex Open
League Division One.
