Match Reports

1 March 2008

Sussex Development League
Lewes Lions 8 (Fuller, Johnson (3), Tapping, Whiting (3))
Chichester Priory Park Cherubs 2

The Lions started this game confidently enough and before long Sam Johnson had scored twice in open play. Lewes then seemed to sit back thinking the job was done and invited the Chi team on, which they willingly accepted and at half time the scores were even at 2-2.

The half time talk was a wake up call, and Lewes came out fighting. Ian Whiting had soon scored from a penalty corner, followed by another goal from Sam Johnson and one from Alex Tapping. Whiting scored twice more, once in open play and once from a penalty corner, leaving James Fuller to add the final goal from a well rehearsed corner routine. A strong second half which saved the match. Well done Lions.

16 February 2008

Sussex Development League
Brighton and Hove Flippers 2
Lewes Lions 2 (Johnson, Whiting)

Several new names appeared on the Lions’ team sheet, as Lewes used the absence of more experienced players during half term break to give match experience to up and coming youngsters on Saturday.

Brighton fielded a very strong team and obviously had come to win. The Lewes new boys fought hard and midway through the first half they went 1-0 up with a skilful goal in open play from Sam Johnson. Brighton reposted strongly, with many long runs carrying the ball from defence. The pressure eventually told as they capitalised on inexperience at the back from Lewes and scored.

In the second half Brighton dominated and took the lead. The Lions held on and fought doggedly to the end, gaining a penalty corner as the final whistle blew. With tension at an extreme, a second penalty corner was awarded, which Ian Whiting took around one player then shot at goal. The ball was partially stopped, but the gods of irony must have been grinning at least, as the ball crept over the line to level the scores. Well done Lions, a valiant display by all.

9 February 2008

Sussex Development League
Lewes Lions 7 (Fuller (2), Johnson, Picot, Tapping, Whiting (2))
Horsham Hotshots 0

A lively home crowd was in attendance to see the Lions take on Horsham for this return match. Lewes started strongly, with Sam Johnson playing in only his second ever game at centre forward opening the scoring with a strike that made the roof of the net bulge. James Fuller soon followed on with a deflected goal in open play and Ian Whiting made it 3-0 for the half with a first time strike from a penalty corner. Horsham never gave up, but the Lions kept on in the same vein, playing good hockey and showing good teamwork.

In the second half, Alex Tapping scored from a well rehearsed penalty corner routine, James Fuller kept a calm head to score once more in open play, Sam Picot gratefully converted a loose ball and Ian Whiting finished off with a long scoring run from just inside the Horsham half. A well earned result for the team.

2 February 2008

Sussex Development League
Lewes Lions 6 (Fuller (2), B Johnson, S Johnson, Whiting (2))
Mid Sussex Colts 0

This was another first class and clinical performance from Lewes’ top-of-the league junior development side. After a sluggish start against a stronger Mid Sussex side, including two adults, Lewes finished two ahead at half time with goals from Ian Whiting and Sam Johnson.

In the second half, Lewes came alive and encamped the opposition half. Strong performances led to goals from James Fuller (2) another from Ian Whiting and Ben Johnson. Alex Tapping had an excellent game. Sam Anderson controlled his flank well and Chris Whiting and Luke Rideout were solid when needed in defence. Thanks go to stand in manager veteran Roger Tapping for his ‘silky’ skills and encouraging guidance.

26 January 2008

Sussex Development League
Penguin Juniors 1
Lewes Lions 1 (Whiting)

Lewes Lions met a very strong Penguin side and it was clear both teams were desperate to win. The early pressure was from Penguins who had several chances on the Lewes goal, only some brave defending and key saves from the Lewes ‘keeper kept the game even.
As the half progressed there were chances at both ends and the tension remained high. The score at half time was 0-0.

In the second half the game ebbed and flowed at a frantic pace, with Ian Whiting breaking the deadlock from a penalty corner with 20 minutes to go. Penguins never eased up however and with four minutes remaining they broke away and scored with a first time shot from a cross from the right wing. Penguins were elated, Lewes thoughtful as the match and their 100% winning streak ended. A special mention for George Davis in goal, but praise for the whole team effort.

19 January 2008

Sussex Development League
Lewes Lions 2 (Fuller, Tapping)
Worthing Tigers 1

This was always going to be a tough game and did not disappoint. Both teams were well prepared and highly motivated and the action was intense from the start. For the first 20 minutes Lewes had the edge but both sides had chances, calling ‘keepers into action at both ends. Lewes made a breakthrough however when on 18 minutes Alex Tapping shot from top D and the ball took a deflection lifting into the goal. Worthing replied strongly and the rest of the half was honours even. Lewes had a shot hit the post and Worthing had one saved on the line. In the second half, play continued at a frantic pace, ebbing and flowing the length of the pitch. James Fuller took advantage of a quickly taken free hit to slot home from close range but Worthing never conceded and the pressure was relentless, culminating in a Tigers goal with 10 minutes to go. Lewes held on until the final whistle for a hard won victory. Special mention to Sam Johnson, Chris Whiting and Luke Rideout for their work in defence.

12 January 2008

Sussex Development League
Worthing Wolves 0
Lewes Lions 5 (Fuller, Johnson B, Johnson S, Picot, Tapping)

Lewes Lions beat Worthing Wolves 5-0, but made hard work of it initially. Lewes had several chances in the first half but failed to convert pressure into goals, though they did force some very good saves from the Worthing ‘keeper.

In the second half Lewes seemed more determined, and renewed pressure soon brought results with a steady flow of passing and movement ending in goals. A very good all round performance in the end with special mention for Alex Tapping. Lewes ran out eventual 5-0 winners and could have had more. They will now need to redouble their efforts for next week's challenge against Worthing Tigers.
