The Bronx vs Lewes
Southdown Sports Club is excited to be hosting a series of squash matches on July 31st between Lewes Juniors and a visiting team of youngsters from CitySquash, based in The Bronx, New York. Yes, kids from The Bronx, birthplace of hip-hop and home to the New York Yankees, with a population of almost 1.5 million people, are coming all the way to the small ancient town of Lewes, of Tom Paine fame, for a day of exciting squash matches.
How did this unlikely state of affairs come about, you may ask? Well, Bryan Patterson, the Director of City Squash, is the father of John Patterson, Head Coach at Southdown, and they concocted this remarkable event between the two of them. Coach John says: “I am very excited to welcome them to beautiful Sussex and the Southdown Club in what I hope is the start of a longer relationship between Lewes and the Bronx. It will be great to see the kids mix!”
What is CitySquash? It’s a not-for-profit after-school enrichment programme dedicated to helping talented young people from economically disadvantaged households to fulfil their academic, athletic and personal potential.
